What is family planning?
Family planning means quality and preventative health care for women and their families.

Family planning clinics are the only source of health care for many uninsured and low-income women. There are approximately 400 family planning clinics in Texas, which served 451,329 clients in 1999. Yet, there were still more than 1.6 million women in need of family planning services.

Nationwide, over 80% of women receiving care at family planning clinics have no other source of medical care.

Family planning services include:
  • patient education and pregnancy prevention counseling
  • birth control methods
  • traditional gynecological services
  • screening for sexually transmitted diseases and infections
  • treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and infections
  • screening for cervical and breast cancer
  • screening for diabetes and kidney disease
  • screening for anemia and hypertension
  • female and male sterilization
  • infertility services
  • HIV and AIDS risk-reduction education
  • HIV testing and counseling
  • pregnancy testing and counseling
  • special services and clinics for teens
  • midlife and post menopausal care
  • colposcopy and treatment for pre-cancerous conditions
  • prenatal care
  • referrals for additional needed care
  • advocacy for patients
  • speaker bureaus and community education programs
  • teen and parent programs
  • peer counseling, teen theater and other teen programs
  • educational programs in schools
  • teacher training
  • community resource
